There are so many ways to stay active during the BoDI shut down. We have come up with some tips to keep you moving, whilst embracing the festive spirit, keeping your routine, maintaining health, relieving stress, and enjoying the summer weather. Make a bucket list and see how many you can mark off!
1. Take Advantage of the Outdoors
- Beach Activities: Swim, surf, paddleboard or play beach volleyball or cricket are great ways to keep moving. Coastal walks such as Coalcliff to Thirroul or Base Point Reserve are also excellent options.
- National Parks: Explore hiking tracks or bushwalks such as the Wodi Wodi walk or taking an overnight trip further afield such as the Blue Mountains is a great way to incorporate fresh air into your summer activities whilst BoDI is closed.
- Cycling: Wollongong is full of bike tracks along the water so grab your helmet (watch for kids and dogs) and go for a cruise on two wheels.
2. Incorporate Activity into Festive Traditions
- Plan outdoor BBQs with backyard cricket, footy, or Frisbee.
- Get your swimmers on and set up the sprinkler – kids optional – for a bit of old school fun (check out water restrictions)
- Suggest a group walk or a game after meals – try a bit of Finska or bocce.
- Host a festive scavenger hunt in the park or garden.
- Take a stroll through the local neighbourhoods to check out the Christmas lights.
3. Early Morning or Evening Workouts
- Beat the heat by exercising early in the morning or late afternoon. Activities like jogging, yoga, or Pilates in a shaded park or in the back yard if you prefer, are refreshing options.
4. Stay Active With Family and Friends – make it social
- Involve kids (preferably kids you know) in physical games or visit adventure parks – you’re never too old to enjoy Jamberoo!
- Take a picnic to the beach or Wollongong Harbour and see if you can spot some yachts going past in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
- Get a big group of friends and/or family to go on adventures with.
6. Hydrate and Protect Yourself
- Always wear sunscreen, a hat, long-sleeve light shirt and stay hydrated, especially if you’re outdoors.
8. Use Active Transport
- Walk or bike to holiday gatherings instead of driving.
- How about taking the train for an adventure and a bit extra movement.
10. Keep It Fun and Flexible
- Don’t stress if your usual routine is disrupted. Focus on staying active in ways that fit naturally into holiday plans.
With a little creativity, you can maintain your movement goals whilst BoDI is closed for the Xmas break all while having a good time!
